The holy month of Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and a time when many Muslims across the world fast during daylight hours for 29-30 days.
As a result, athletes undergo an intermittent fast period. The way they cope with the demands of training and racing becomes especially challenging in these times. Depending on the geographical location and the season of the year, the duration of the fast will vary.
Over the past years, Muslim athletes have had an added challenge to the already stressful period. The major Games and championships were scheduled right after the end of Ramadan. It left Muslim athletes in a clear disadvantage against their competitors who don't decide to undergo the intermittent fast period. Also, the weather becomes scorching in the summer, making some training scenarios especially challenging to deal with.
